On December 1st 1927 the Soong Family affiliated itself
with the building now known as 'sasha's'. Soong Ziwen, also known as
Charlie Soong, bought the estate for his sister Soong Meiling
and Husband Jiang Jieshi as a wedding gift. The couple frequently spent
time away allowing the house to be used as venue for important meetings
amongst government officials. Around 1943 the house
was sadly lost to the Japanese army who occupied Shanghai. Almost seven years later in 1950, the
people's liberation gave 'sasha's' back to the government, and the
building became a music school. It was decades later before a group
of expatriate businessman agreed to lease the house from the music
school and after weeks of careful reconstruction, the Soong Family mansion
was ready to open it's doors as "sasha's", named after the Soong's alledged mistress, as
it took the stage relishing the opportunity to bring Shanghai an
elegant New World dining experience in a spectacular Old World setting.
